      <image:title>Our Vision - Readings and Productions</image:title>
<image:caption>CLASSIX aims to work with theaters nationwide and around the world to support curation of the Black classical canon inside theater seasons. This is also a collaboration with individual artists looking to create new productions and adaptations of these plays.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Vision - Narrative</image:title>
<image:caption>The narrative component of CLASSIX is all about how we tell stories about these plays. The guiding principle is how can we create resources about these authors and these productions that engage their biography, give context to the eras in which the plays were created and find continued ways to celebrate the incredible artistry of the theater makers. Through essays, podcasts, seminars and social media there are infinite stories to be told.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Vision - Education</image:title>
<image:caption>The education pillar is about the myriad ways to engage the Black theater canon in academia. This is through transforming the curriculum to include a wider array of plays in teaching, scene study and production. Additionally, the education pillar aims to look at how these plays can be taught across disciplines as ways to look at history, politics, African-American studies, economics, and more.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Vision - Publication</image:title>
<image:caption>CLASSIX is beginning the work to publish new editions of both the plays that are hardest to access. Some of this work will be to create a reader of a selected playwright’s plays, some will be to create larger profiles of artists whose stories need to be chronicled. The Legends Series will interview living legends to capture their lifetime of work in the theater and publish these stories in new collections. Lastly, this pillar will include new scholarly writing and essays about Black theater history as it relates to the Black theater future.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Act 1, Ep1 - Rhiannon Giddens</image:title>
<image:caption>Rhiannon Giddens is a celebrated artist who excavates the past to reveal truths about our present. A MacArthur “Genius Grant” recipient, Giddens has been Grammy-nominated six times, and won once, for her work with the Carolina Chocolate Drops, a group she co-founded. She was most recently nominated for her collaboration with multi-instrumentalist Francesco Turrisi, there is no Other (2019). Giddens’s forthcoming album, They’re Calling Me Home, also a collaboration with Turrisi, is due out this April and features songs of her heritage, sung to console her while she has been unable to go home to her native North Carolina due to the ongoing pandemic. Giddens has performed for the Obamas at the White House and acted in two seasons of the hit television series “Nashville”. She has been profiled by CBS Sunday Morning, the New York Times, and NPR’s Fresh Air, among other outlets. She is featured in Ken Burns’s Country Music series, which aired on PBS in 2019, where she speaks about the African American origins of country music. She is also a member of the band Our Native Daughters with three other black female banjo players - and produced their album Songs of Our Native Daughters (2019), which tells stories of historic black womanhood and survival. Giddens was recently named Artistic Director of Silkroad Ensemble, with whom she is developing a number of new programs, including The American Silkroad, an exploration of the music of the American transcontinental railroad and it’s builders. She has also written the music for an original ballet, Lucy Negro Redux (the first ballet written by women of color for a black prima ballerina), and the libretto and music for an original opera, Omar, based on the autobiography of the enslaved man Omar Ibn Said. Giddens’s lifelong mission is to lift up people of color whose contributions to American musical history have previously been erased, and to work toward a more accurate understanding of the country’s musical origins. Pitchfork has said of her “few artists are so fearless and so ravenous in their exploration,” and Smithsonian Magazine calls her “an electrifying artist who brings alive the memories of forgotten predecessors, white and black.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Act 1, Episode 3 - Rhiannon Giddens</image:title>

      <image:title>Act 2: Alice Childress - Act 2: Alice Childress</image:title>
<image:caption>Playwright, performer, novelist, and cultural critic, Alice Childress looms as an incredibly important but often forgotten figure within the history of the American theater. The breadth of her writing intersects with major movements of Black artistic and political thought, and yet, until recently her work has been relegated to the shadows. For Act 2 of (re)clamation, CLASSIX shines a light on the life, work and legacy of Alice Childress.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Act 2, Episode 6 - Soyica Diggs Colbert</image:title>
<image:caption>Colbert’s most recent book, Radical Vision, a “loving, lavishly detailed” (New York Times) and captivating portrait of Lorraine Hansberry’s life, art, and political activism—one of O Magazine's best books of April 2021 is also described as "A devoted and deeply felt account of the development of an artist’s mind," according to Dave Itzkoff, New York Times Book Review. In this acclaimed biography of Lorraine Hansberry, Colbert narrates a life at the intersection of art and politics, arguing that for Hansberry the theater operated as a rehearsal room for her political and intellectual work. She has held fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities to support a residency at the Schomburg Center, Woodrow Wilson Foundation, Stanford University, Mellon Foundation, and the Robert W. Woodruff Library at Emory University. Colbert has also lectured nationally and internationally at universities, high schools, and middle schools as well as for civic and arts organizations. Colbert’s writing has been featured in the The New York Times, Washington Post, Public Books, Metrograph and American Theatre. She has been interviewed on NPR and commented for the New York Times, USA Today, CNN, and the Washington Post. She is an Associate Director at the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C. In addition to Radical Vision, Colbert is the author of Bodies: Theory for Theatre Studies, Black Movements: Performance and Cultural Politics, and The African American Theatrical Body. Colbert co-edited Race and Performance After Repetition and The Psychic Hold of Slavery. Most recently, she served as a Creative Content Producer for The Public Theatre’s audio play, shadow/land. Her research interests span the 19th-21st centuries, from Harriet Tubman to Beyoncé, and from poetics to performance.</image:caption>
